Yoast SEO Plugin – A Beginner’s Guide on How To Download, Install and Setup on WordPress

For many website owners, SEO appears to be unnecessarily complicated. It doesn’t have to be so true.

While employing a highly experienced SEO specialist has many advantages, there is still a lot to accomplish on your own using well-designed SEO tools and configurable content management systems such as WordPress.

Today, I’d like to discuss the ideal pairing of WordPress and Yoast SEO.

You don’t need to look any further than WordPress for a powerful, customizable, and simple-to-use platform to host your website. And WordPress is being used to construct over 500 new websites every day.

Learning how to use WordPress is pretty easy, lowering the entrance barrier for many publishers or site owners.

WordPress is an open-source software, which means it’s highly configurable, and of course! Thanks to plugins created by programmers all around the world.

There are more than 58,000+ plugins for WordPress,  and you may use these plugins to personalize your WordPress site in some ways, including:

  • Adding social media sharing buttons
  • Obtaining data on shares
  • Checking for spam in comments
  • Putting together photo galleries and slideshows
  • Search engine optimization
  • And there are plenty more.

Let’s speak about the Yoast SEO plugin now that you know what WordPress is and how plugins can help you get the most out of it. This plugin is mighty, and if you aren’t using it already, you are missing out on many things.

What is Yoast SEO Plugin?

Yoast SEO is a search engine optimization (SEO) plugin for WordPress. The plugin has 5 million active users and has been downloaded more than 310 million times.

‘SEO for everyone’ is Yoast’s tagline, and it truly is for everyone, regardless of their level of SEO knowledge. Yoast simplifies the concept of SEO and doesn’t require any coding skills to get it, which is why it is on my favorites list.

And here’s how Yoast SEO looks on your WordPress admin panel:

Before getting into how to download and install Yoast, let’s understand it better, and for this, we need to know about the two variations of the Yoast SEO plugin.

Two Versions of Yoast: Free vs Premium

When Yoast SEO started, it had only the free version, but later a new premium version was released in 2012. Let’s have a quick glance at how they differ.

Although, both seem to offer the pretty same features. But there are many features in premium that are not being addressed by many.

Here’s a rundown of what Free Version offers,

A link counter on the inside.

Keyword usage is examined.

A readability test is also included.

You’ll be able to change your SEO title, URL slug, and meta description.

A sneak peek at how your content will appear on mobile devices and in Google search results.

Premium Offers many extra features….here they are,

Suggestions of Internal linking.

Previews of social media sharing.

Provides a better multiple keyword analysis.

A more sophisticated tool enabling redirections.

If you go through Yoast, you will find it easy to use. But I am going to take you through each step from the basics.

How To Download and Install Yoast SEO Plugin to WordPress?

Let’s get the Yoast SEO plugin installed on your site if you don’t already have it. If you already have Yoast SEO installed and you are here to learn more about how to use it, you can go to the ‘Using Yoast SEO’ section.

Look for the ‘Plugins’ option on the left nav bar on your site’s admin panel. When you hover your mouse over it, you’ll see the option to ‘Add New.’ You will be taken to a page with a list of featured, popular, and recommended plugins.

If you can’t locate Yoast SEO under any of these headings, you may use the search box to look for it. Once you’ve found the Yoast SEO plugin, click ‘Install Now,’ and WordPress will automatically download, install, and prompt you to activate the plugin

If you have accurately installed and activated it, you should see an option labeled ‘SEO’ in the left nav bar menu and along the horizontal menu bar at the top of the screen.

It is simple to download and install Yoast SEO, but now you must configure the plugin. If you’ve never used Yoast SEO before, this may sound daunting, but I assure you it’s not impossible to master. I can’t promise that this procedure will be a nonstop, adrenaline-pumping thrill trip, but it’ll be well worth the effort it takes to set it up correctly. Because the optimum Yoast settings differ from site to site, I won’t give you any hard and fast recommendations, but I will guide you through each of the options.

How To Set Up Yoast SEO?

Yoast SEO has many elements to set up here I will be enclosing a few main elements,

  • General
  • Titles & Metas
  • XML Sitemap
  • Search Console
  • Advanced
  • Social
  • Tools

1. General

To begin, go to your site’s admin dashboard, locate the ‘SEO’ option on the left-hand side menu (or top menu, whichever you choose), and select ‘General.’ This will take you to a screen where you may configure some basic global SEO settings for your website.

  • General: The ‘General’ option is where you may return Yoast SEO to its default settings, only if you ever need to. If you don’t wish to take the introductory tour, go to ‘Your Info.’

  • Your Info: As the name suggests, this is where you need to add your info like the site name, any other name if it exists. If your site is for a company, you may need a logo to submit. This data is shown on the meta description, so make sure you enter this precisely.

  • Webmaster Tools: If you intend to use Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Alexa, or Yandex Webmaster Tools, you may validate your site here if it hasn’t previously been verified. Regardless of the tool you choose, the basic method is very much the same.

  • Security: If you’re dealing with a single-author site, you don’t need to worry about this and may uncheck this item. This part, however, might be useful if you’re dealing with a site where numerous authors may access the site and provide material.

2. Titles and Metas

This element is crucial for SEO since it allows you to have some control over how your site appears in SERPs. This has a total of 5 sections, let’s have a look at them.

  • General: You can alter how your titles appear here, such as ‘Your Site Name | Contact Us’ or ‘Your Site Name – Contact Us.’ Whichever title separator you pick will appear on all of your site’s pages. The ‘Force rewrite titles’ option also fixes an issue on some sites where the site name appears twice in the title.

  • Homepage: This section appears as per your site’s pages. If you are using one page as home and another page for the blog, this would appear as below.

Edit this section as per your priority.

  • Post Types: This is something to deal with…! The section plays a crucial role in SEO, so I will try to explain this more better. This primarily has Posts and Pages.
Post Types of Titles and Metas of Yoast SEO

Titles and Meta Descriptions – If you don’t write a unique SEO-optimized title or meta description for each page, your titles and meta descriptions will be based on the basic template you set up here.

Meta Robots – If there’s anything you don’t want search engines to index, you can do that with the ‘noindex, follow’ option. Most of the time, you can leave this box unchecked. However, tick the box if you have sites you want to keep out of search engines or sites that potentially result in duplicate content penalties.

Date in Snippet Preview – To put it simply, if you are a blogger who posts regularly, you can check this box, if you are someone who just posts once in a while better you keep this the same.

Yoast SEO Meta Box – If your site has contributors other than, I prefer checking this option.

  • Taxonomies: The ‘Taxonomies’ tab comes next. This section may be used to build up title and meta description templates for sites that are similar to a blog and you can use several distinct categories and tags to arrange content.

  • Archives: Having pages of archived content based on date or the author is a terrific method to make it easier for your visitors to access old content, especially when you have a blog. Archive sites, on the other hand, aren’t always ideal for search engines, which may deem them duplicate information. You may prevent this by changing your archive pages to ‘no index’ from here, or you may deactivate archive pages entirely if you want.

  • Others: This section is explained better by Yoast itself, so there is no need to talk much about this. Have a look at the image below.

Now, it’s time for the XML sitemap.

3. XML Sitemap

It looks something like this.

XML Sitemap of Yoast SEO

One of the great features of Yoast SEO is…it builds a sitemap automatically when you activate XML sitemap capabilities, refreshes it when you add new material, and pings search engines when it’s changed.

You’ll be able to decide whether or not you want things like particular sorts of articles or post categories included in your sitemap. Simply browse the different tabs and, if you notice something you don’t want in your sitemap, select the box next to it to remove it.

By inputting the post ID numbers under the ‘Excluded Posts’ page, you may easily omit individual posts from sitemaps.

4. Search Console

This is only for the Google Search Console users, you can skip this if you are not one. So, select ‘Search Console’ from the ‘SEO’ menu on the left-hand side.

Search Console Settings of Yoast SEO

You’ll get a verification number here, which you’ll need to connect Yoast to Google Search Console. This will provide you with a list of site faults that your site’s users have faced, as well as the ability to correct them directly from your site’s dashboard. You may also use this feature to set a redirect for a broken link. And don’t forget to hit the ‘Save Profile’ option.

5. Advanced

The Advanced section has 3 more sub-sections.

  • Breadcrumbs: If breadcrumbs are enabled on your site, visitors will see links at the top of the page that illustrate the route that leads to the current page. (For instance, Site Name > Blog > Post Title.) Unfortunately, including breadcrumbs on your website is not as straightforward as clicking this box.
Breadcrumbs of Yoast SEO
  • Permalinks: You may make your URL structure, permalinks, and the <Head> section more search engine friendly by cleaning them up here. Yoast SEO does a great job describing each of these choices, so there’s no need for me to go over it again.
Permalinks of Yoast SEO
  • RSS: When your postings show in RSS feeds, you may use this part to add material, give yourself credit, and link back to your site. If a scraper scrapes material from your site’s RSS feed, you’ll still earn credit and backlinks.

6. Social

The ‘Accounts’ under the ‘Social’ section is self-explanatory. All you have to do now is copy and paste the URLs into each of your social media accounts. But keep in mind that you just need to provide your username in the Twitter area.

Social Section

Filling out this area informs search engines that your site is linked to them. You can modify how information shared from your site should appear on each network by going through the tabs for particular social media networks.

7. Tools

Yoast SEO is packed with some powerful tools,

Tools Section
  • Bulk Editor: If you ever find yourself needing to make changes to numerous titles and/or descriptions at a time, you can use this to bring up a list of all your articles and pages so that you can easily go through and make all your changes at once.
  • File Editor: Changes to your robots.txt and your .htaccess files can be made using the ‘File Editor’ tool.
  • Import and Export: You can save a backup copy of your settings by exporting them. If you have other sites where Yoast SEO should be installed, you can always export your settings and import them.

I hope this post has answered the majority of your questions concerning Yoast. As you can see, it’s a really handy and strong SEO tool for all types of website owners.
